Captain’s Log: Day 11

This past weekend, my SIL posted a picture on The Gram of her and the family in Tahoe - which is only a few hours away from where we are.  So of course the first thing I did after seeing this was to get on the phone with my brother to berate him for not thinking to call us so we could meet him up there.  In his defense, he didn’t realize that we were actually that close, so we will let him continue to live… In typical little bro fashion, he was like, just come up!  Even though I’m a Sagittarius and we’re supposed to be super spontaneous and adventurous, spontaneity has never been my strong point.  I am a big thinker.  I have to look at things from all angles and play out different scenarios in my head.  It is my blessing, and my curse.  When my mom met me in Europe after I finished my summer in Rome and we went to Germany and Austria to see where her parents were born and raised, I had a really hard time with the fact that we didn’t have plans and hotels locked down and were spending some of the time just flying by the seat of our pants.  It ended up being wonderful and amazing, but it was still hard for me to just “go”.  So when my brother asked me to go up, I didn’t feel like I could.  What about Trooper?  Where would he go?  I couldn’t leave him alone and the Ex-hubs was still in New York.  I didn’t ask for it off of work and I had a lot of conference calls on Monday morning.  What about the kids?Everyone was out and about doing their own things.  I tabled it and told my brother it was too hard to get away – until the Eldest reminded me that it had been since Thanksgiving that she saw her cousins.  She, in all her infinite wisdom of 19 year old, gave me the push I needed to get out of being comfortable and to make it all happen.

We literally were up there for a day and a half.  We stayed in a clean, but dive-ish hotel (the kids were joking that it was the hotel from Diary of a Wimpy Kid…) that was a couple blocks away from the nicer hotel where my brother and his family were staying, complete with a pool and Lake Tahoe literally out the back door – but it was perfect for one night of sleeping.  When we got there, we met the Bro and SIL right away for dinner, and seeing the faces of my niece and nephew realizing that the people walking across the street to the restaurant at the same time they were walking in were really their beloved older cousins, was well worth the trek.  We spent the next day at the pool and the lake, the big cousins taking turns tossing the littles in the pool and burying them in the sand.  It was perfect – and a good reminder to me to get out of my own head and to say ‘yes’ more often.

Weather: Sunny and mild.
